My Story The early years to now LET'S TALK

A little bit about me…

I’ve been where you are.

I didn’t come to men’s health nutrition through a textbook. I came to it through lived experience – as a man who spent years struggling with his weight, his energy, his relationship with food, and eventually his health. I know what it feels like to be told things are “fine” when you clearly aren’t. And I know what it takes to turn things around.

That personal journey – from overweight schoolboy to pre-diabetic career professional to registered functional nutritionist – is the foundation of everything I do at Mark Killick Health. It’s why I specialise in men’s health, and why I understand the challenges men face in ways that go beyond clinical theory.

“I know what it feels like to carry weight you can’t shift, to run on empty, and to watch your health quietly decline. I also know that the right nutritional approach can change everything.”

The Early Years – A Difficult Relationship With Food

I was the ‘fat boy’ at school. I know how that sounds, and I know how it feels – the self-consciousness, the poor body image, the low self-esteem, the sense of being permanently at odds with your own body. I tried diet after diet, and nothing worked long-term. What it left me with was an erratic, complicated relationship with food that would take years to unpick.

For many of the men I work with today, this story sounds familiar. The cycle of restriction and frustration. The sense that your body is working against you. The quiet damage that does to your confidence and your mental health. I understand it first-hand and that understanding shapes how I work with every client.

A Science Foundation – Seeing Food Differently

I went on to study Biotechnology at degree level, which gave me a scientific grounding that would prove invaluable later in my career. My first job was as a food technologist at Marks & Spencer – and even then, working from the inside, I could see the long-term dangers of processed foods and the way the modern food environment quietly undermines men’s health.

The Wake-Up Call – Stress, Blood Sugar & the Edge of Diabetes

My career took me away from food and into the City of London, managing a large trust. It was high-pressure, high-stakes work — and my health paid the price. A combination of poor diet, chronic stress, and alcohol pushed me to the edge of a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. My energy was poor, my weight had crept up, and I was running on cortisol and caffeine.

This is a pattern I see regularly in the men who come to see me — high-achieving, hard-working, quietly neglecting their health until the body forces the conversation. For me, that near-diagnosis was the turning point. I wasn’t prepared to accept it as inevitable. I wanted to understand why it was happening and what I could do about it through nutrition and lifestyle.

That question changed the direction of my life.

“The stress of modern working life is one of the biggest and most underestimated drivers of men’s health problems. I’ve experienced it myself – and I’ve spent years developing practical strategies to help men manage it.”

Training, Transformation & Turning the Tide

I enrolled at the Institute of Optimum Nutrition, one of the UK’s leading nutrition training institutions, graduating alongside notable alumni including Amelia Freer and Dana James. During my training, I did exactly what I now help my clients to do: I steadied my weight, reversed my pre-diabetes, improved my energy, and rebuilt a genuinely healthy relationship with food.

It wasn’t a quick fix. It was a systematic, evidence-based process of understanding how my body worked, identifying what it needed, and making changes that were sustainable rather than punishing. The difference was profound — not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too.

Experience & Credentials

Since qualifying, I have built a career that spans clinical practice, industry, education, and advocacy — all centred on the power of nutrition to transform men’s health.

How I Approach Men’s Health

My own health journey has made me a better nutritionist, because I’ve done the work myself. I regularly run my own bespoke blood tests twice a year — assessing key nutrient levels, blood sugar and lipid markers, inflammatory markers, and hormones. I understand firsthand what it means to track your health proactively rather than waiting for something to go wrong.

My own DNA analysis revealed an elevated genetic risk around my cardiovascular system, which I actively manage through targeted nutrition. Functional testing has also helped me optimise my thyroid function and gut microbiome. This is the level of detail and personalisation I bring to every client.

I’ve also learned — the hard way — that stress and ‘life-load’ are among the most damaging and most ignored factors in men’s health. Chronic stress suppresses testosterone, disrupts blood sugar, damages the gut, raises cardiovascular risk, and drains the energy and motivation that men need to function at their best. Managing it isn’t a soft option — it’s a clinical necessity.

“I don’t just hand you a meal plan. I help you understand your own body – so that the changes you make are informed, sustainable, and genuinely yours.”
